It’s often thought to be one of the most fun reality shows on TV, but The Amazing Race Australia has also proved to be one of the most dangerous. Multiple contestants on this year’s season flew home with serious health issues, including Steph Tisdell who had arthritis in her knees, Leni Fevola whose appendix burst a week after withdrawing from the race, and Stella Klim who was diagnosed with epilepsy after being medically removed.
Monday night’s grand finale also saw actor and comedian Stephen Curry struggle with a knee injury which almost forced him to withdraw from the competition. He and his brother Bernard ended up winning the season, raising $100,000 for their chosen charity One in Five, but the pair told Yahoo Lifestyle it definitely wasn’t an easy experience.
“My knee was the worst it had been in the whole race, a very, very inopportune time,” he said.
“It’s an old injury — so I did my knee, and I dislocated the patella and smacked it back in and fractured the patella about 25 years ago, and I’ve just never got it fixed.”
Bernard adds that they were very fortunate the race ended when it did, because they might not have made it if they had to continue for another week.
“It’s such a high pressure environment, everything is on the line, and there are really high stakes,” he said.

Stephen’s major ‘error’
Stephen shares that the show’s “phenomenal” medical team were well across his injury throughout filming, regularly strapping it up and giving him anti-inflammatories.
However, he joked that he wishes he hadn’t told producers about the injury before the show.
“I made this stupid school boy error of telling the network before we started racing that I have a very old and very fragile knee, and now I can’t get them for compo,” he said.
“But we were in great hands and felt like we were just being looked after in the best possible ways, so it was really fortunate to have that team behind us.”
How the show impacted their relationship
Throughout the entire season, Stephen and Bernard were often the only team who weren’t shown bickering or arguing during challenges.
While their co-stars walked away from the experience improving their communication and learning new things about one another, the brothers admit The Amazing Race simply reminded them of what they already know.
“We come from a really close family, and we come from a really supportive family, and we’re just not arguers,” Stephen said.
Bernard added that the show’s producers kept asking them when the cracks in their relationship would start to show, but there was never any conflict.
“We haven’t really had an argument since 1992 I guess,” Stephen laughed.
“I think it annoyed them, because I think we would have made far better television if we had’ve just punched on at some stage, but they had enough of that drama within the dynamic of relationships through some of the other contestations that they used us as a bit of a juxtaposition.”
