The Timberwolves have launched an investigation to identify the individual who made “racially charged comments” toward Draymond Green in Game 2.
A disturbing incident unfolded during Game 2 between the Golden State Warriors and the Minnesota Timberwolves at Target Center on Thursday night.
A fan is said to have directed a racial slur at Draymond Green, and the Timberwolves have now issued a statement regarding that individual and another, who was ejected from the game.
“During the fourth quarter of last night’s game against the Warriors, a fan was ejected by Target Center security for violating the NBA Fan Code of Conduct in an incident involving Draymond Green,” the statement read.
“A second individual, who was identified by surrounding patrons as making racially charged comments towards Green, left on his own before arena security could confirm his identity. The team is continuing to investigate, and additional action may be taken.
“The Timberwolves and Target Center are firmly committed to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and safe environment for all. Racist, hateful, or threatening behavior has no place at our games or in our community and will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” the statement concluded.
Green was on a stationary bike in the fourth quarter when those comments were made to him. Here is a clip of him going back and forth with a fan.
Green was fuming after the game, and these incidents might explain why. Draymond stated he isn’t an angry black man and added that he is sick of the agenda against him.
Whatever you may think of Green, no one deserves to be treated in this manner. This individual should never be allowed to attend an NBA game in the future.
This incident somewhat put a damper on what had been a thoroughly dominant display by the Timberwolves. After dropping a stinker in Game 1 to go down 1-0, they blew away the Warriors 117-93 in Game 2.
Julius Randle led the way with 24 points (10-17 FG), seven rebounds, and 11 assists, while Anthony Edwards had 20 points (6-13 FG), nine rebounds, five assists, three steals, and a block. Five Timberwolves players scored in double digits as they cruised to victory.
The Warriors, on the other hand, struggled offensively without Stephen Curry. They surprisingly won Game 1 despite him exiting in the second quarter with a hamstring strain, but were no match for the Timberwolves this time around.
Jonathan Kuminga was one of the few bright spots for the Warriors on the night as he finished with 18 points (8-11 FG), five rebounds, and one assist off the bench. As for Green, he had nine points (3-10 FG), four rebounds, five assists, one steal, and one block.
This series is now tied at 1-1, and while the Warriors have home-court advantage thanks to that win in Game 1, it’s hard to be optimistic about their chances of advancing. The earliest that Curry could return is reportedly Game 6, and the series could be done by then.
The Warriors’ hopes of staying alive until Curry returns rest on Jimmy Butler’s shoulders. We have seen Butler erupt in the playoffs before, and he’ll need to deliver a masterclass in one of these next three games. He only had 17 points in Game 2, and that was never going to be enough.
Will “Playoff Jimmy” show up in this series? Well, time will tell. Game 3 between the Warriors and Timberwolves will be played at Chase Center on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. ET.
