As the Montreal Canadiens continue their offseason search for solutions down the middle, an intriguing twist has emerged involving two of the KHL’s most dynamic talents. Evgeny Kuznetsov, a proven NHL center with a history of offensive production, has openly expressed his desire to reunite with rising star Ivan Demidov in Montreal.

The two showcased impressive chemistry last season overseas, sparking speculation about what they could accomplish together in the NHL. Yet, despite Kuznetsov’s willingness to join the Canadiens and fill their glaring need at second-line center, the organization appears unmoved by his interest.

This unexpected development has left fans and analysts puzzled, especially given the team’s ongoing quest for depth and experience at a crucial position. With Kuznetsov’s agent confirming the veteran’s hopes and the Canadiens’ current lack of reciprocation, the situation highlights the delicate balance of team-building and the unpredictable nature of the NHL’s summer market.

As speculation swirls about Kuznetsov’s next move and the Canadiens’ plans, this story promises to remain at the forefront of offseason conversations.

We know that Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens still have a major situation to resolve this summer and heading into the fall.

We’re obviously talking about the matter of the much-discussed second-line center.

Well, on that topic, Shumi Babaev has just revealed a very interesting piece of information for Montreal Canadiens fans.

Who is Shumi Babaev? He is the agent of former Washington Capitals forward Evgeny Kuznetsov.

Evgeny Kuznetsov Wants to Play with Ivan Demidov and the Montreal Canadiens

Clearly, Kuznetsov really enjoyed playing with Demidov in the KHL last season, and he would like to try the experience again in the NHL next season!

There’s only one problem..

Even though Kuznetsov is offering himself to play for the Montreal Canadiens, it seems they are not interested.

Unfortunately, the interest is not mutual.

According to Evgeny Kuznetsov’s agent Shumi Babaev, despite the fact Kuznetsov would want to play in Montreal, the Canadiens are not interested at this time.

Kuznetsov, standing at 6 feet 1 inch and weighing 198 pounds, averaged 65 points per season in his last three campaigns with the Washington Capitals (from 2021 to 2024).

The Capitals’ 1st-round pick in 2010 (26th overall) also tallied 37 points in 39 games last season in the KHL, where he indeed played alongside one Ivan Demidov.

I’m surprised to see that the Canadiens are not interested in offering him a short one-year contract, especially considering the team’s significant need at center. But I imagine Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton feel that Kirby Dach remains a better option than Kuznetsov at this stage of his career.

Could a return to the Washington Capitals be an option for the 33-year-old forward?
