Throughout this season of The Block, Robby and Mat have been keeping a huge secret from the other teams on site. The boys came onto the show with the mission of creating an underground wine cellar in their backyard, which they have dubbed their “secret weapon”.

While they’ve been secretly working on it for some time, Ben has always known that something is happening at House 5 and has been keen to create his own selling point for his house. Now, it seems Emma and Ben are going to do something rather similar to the boys after having a lightbulb moment when previous winners Steph and Gian did a walkthrough of their space.

“Your house is very elevated,” Steph told the couple, with Emma agreeing that their house is “so much higher than everyone else’s”.

“You could almost create something under that,” Steph added, with Gian suggesting a wine cellar.

Immediately, you could see the cogs turning in Emma and Ben’s brains as they considered the idea.

The producers then showed a moment from two weeks earlier, where Emma told the cameras, “I guess taking inspiration from a neighbour is a good idea, but I think flat out copying… that’s a bit sneaky.”

“If we put a wine cellar at the bottom of our backyard, it’d be considered cheating,” Ben said at the time.

Robby is then seen saying, “We’re too far ahead with ours for anyone to copy, so unfortunately, no one can do a hole in the ground.”

Following their discussion with Steph and Gian, Emma and Ben were determined to add a wine cellar under the house, given its significantly elevated position compared to the other houses. But would that be considered cheating?

When producers ask them this week if this room would be a cellar, they respond that it would be a “wine storage room”.

“If we can pull it off, I think we’ll be in the lead with our Block game,” Emma says to Ben.

The Block fans divided over ‘cheating claims’

Fans were divided over whether or not the pair were, in fact, cheating, with one person writing, “I love this, anything to help make your property better! It’s a competition after all.”

“The boys actually haven’t told anyone they are doing a cellar soooooooo!? Fair game I say,” another said.

“Why is this all hyped as copying? They are all copying trends, colours, furniture from somewhere else in the first place,” a third wrote. “It’s about who appeals the best to the buyers, so go for it Ben and Em!”

“Absolutely NOT cheating!” one viewer said. “The boys don’t have a monopoly on a wine cellar!! What the?! Go for it Em and Ben.”

“How is it copying when it’s wine storage under the house versus wine storage underground?” someone else questioned.

Many others disagreed, however, with one person writing, “I like Ben and Emma, but come on guys think of your own game changer, not by using the boys who have had theirs for weeks now.”

“No one likes a copycat,” another said.

“Not cool at all,” a third added, while someone else agreed that it wasn’t “a good look” for the couple.

“It’s not really cheating, I’d say, but it’s definitely being a copycat. Don’t love that for them…” someone else said.
