A new report from ESPN reveals how new Vegas Golden Knights forward Mitch Marner feels about the media in Sin City compared to what he faced in Toronto for the 1st several years of his career with the Maple Leafs.
The era for Mitch Marner with the Toronto Maple Leafs came to an end this summer as he was traded as part of a massive sign and trade deal with the Vegas Golden Knights shortly after signing a new lengthy contract.
Marner now earns an AAV (average annual value) of $12 million, a $1.1 million raise over what he was making over the last several years with the Maple Leafs.
It’s also no secret that Marner faced intensifying scrutiny from the fans and media in Toronto, which is one of the most media-heavy markets in professional sports when it comes to Maple Leafs coverage.
Even though the Golden Knights have enjoyed tremendous success into their introduction into the NHL in 2017, they’re still a non-traditional market with not nearly the media presence as Toronto has.
Per a new report from ESPN’s Emily Kaplan, Marner likes the less intense media scrutiny in Vegas.

Mitch Marner’s Security in Toronto is No Longer Needed
Some fans took the latest Maple Leafs loss in the playoffs way too far, allegedly sending threatening messages to Marner and his family.
Marner explained shortly after he and the Maple Leafs were eliminated by the divisional foe Florida Panthers in May that he got a call from his father in law, who informed him of the concerning messages.
(He) goes: ‘I just want to let you know we’ve got people sending us screenshots of a guy posting your address online saying that if people want to come pay us a visit and say, you know, their goodbyes, in a quotation way, here’s the address.’ And it was a little tough, obviously. – Mitch Marner
It’s understandable that Marner would want to remove himself from that kind of environment, not only for his own safety and metal health but for that of his family, which now includes a newborn son.
