Connor McDavid’s name has always been synonymous with hockey greatness, but this week, he sent shockwaves through the NHL for reasons far beyond his skill on the ice.
Fresh off a headline-making contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers, McDavid met the media and delivered a message that left fans and analysts buzzing: for him, winning isn’t just a goal—it’s an obsession.
The details of his new deal, including a jaw-dropping salary discount, have sparked intense debate across the hockey world. Why would the league’s brightest star take less money at the height of his career? Is there more to this decision than meets the eye?
As speculation swirls about the Oilers’ future and McDavid’s role in shaping it, one thing is clear: the captain is making moves that could redefine what it means to be a superstar in today’s NHL.
With Edmonton perched on the brink of a championship, McDavid’s bold choices have opened up opportunities—and raised plenty of questions. What’s really driving his commitment? How will this affect the team, the league, and his own legacy? The answers may surprise you, and the full story is more complex than anyone imagined. Dive deeper to uncover what’s truly at stake.

Connor McDavid spoke to the media today fresh off his historic contract extension, and reiterated his message that winning the Stanley Cup is all that matters.
News broke yesterday of McDavid’s extension and his astounding salary discount. It’s just a short-term deal, but McDavid taking so much less salary to help the team was a selfless display, and proved winning is his top priority.
»Not Gonna Go Hungry»: McDavid speaks on salary discount and belief in Oilers to win Stanley Cup
Multiple times, McDavid stressed that he’s in a unique situation to ruthlessly pursue the Stanley Cup. The Oilers don’t have the best future outlook, but their current core is right on the cusp of winning. So the Captain felt it was best to stay short-term, with a big discount to help the team aggressively add new players.
McDavid’s also already secured over $100M in career earnings by the age of 28. He joked that his salary discount isn’t much of a sacrifice anyway.
It’s a unique situation. We knew we weren’t going to sign a long term deal. So two years ago that number makes a lot of sense. Gives us a chance to extend our window here in Edmonton.
Lenny’s not going to go hungry with that money. We’ll be fine. It’s about winning, that’s always what I’ve preached. So, I think this deal gives both sides what they’re looking for.

McDavid also spoke about the importance of the front office building the team around him in the next 3 years he’s under contract.
He recognized the efforts to add some younger players with potential, but now has also given the team cap room to add established stars.
There’s no secret that with a team that pushes for it every year like we have We’ve given up first round picks, prospects, and all that stuff, not a ton of young guys.
So I think 2 years gives us a chance to play this out, gives us every opportunity to build something here. Our heart’s here. We want to win here. That’s the bottom line, and I think that deal expresses that.
It’s an incredibly display to see the Captain and best player in the NHL so dialled in on the singular goal of winning to the point he would forego salary and is deeply engaged in talks with the General Manager on their assets.
McDavid is ultra-committed to bringing success to Edmonton, and this contract shows exactly that.
