The Montreal Canadiens have been buzzing with anticipation over their next generation of talent, with fans and analysts alike eagerly debating which young star will rise to claim the coveted second-line center position.
Michael Hage’s name has dominated those conversations, but behind the scenes, another intriguing contender is quietly making waves overseas—one whose unexpected journey could upend everything we thought we knew about the team’s future plans.
This player, originally drafted for a completely different role, has recently taken on new responsibilities in a league known for its intensity and relentless competition.
Early glimpses of his adaptation have already caught the attention of coaches and scouts, raising eyebrows and sparking fresh debates about what lies ahead. His recent performances have not only challenged expectations but have also hinted at the potential for a dramatic shift in the Canadiens’ long-term strategy.
Yet just as the excitement builds, an unexpected setback threatens to complicate his rapid ascent. The details of his progress, the nature of his transformation, and the impact it could have on Montreal’s roster remain shrouded in uncertainty. Who is this rising star, and could his journey redefine the Canadiens’ future? The answers may surprise you.

There is a lot of talk about Michael Hage as being the next second-line center for the Montreal Canadiens.
Another player could very well, in the coming years, challenge the spot of the one who will play this season in the NCAA, and that’s Alexander Zharovsky.
It’s a big surprise, because the Russian forward was drafted as a winger, not as a center. But Ufa Salavat Yulayev, his team in the KHL, is currently developing him at the center position.
Preseason games at center for Alexander Zharovsky in the KHL
As reported, Zharovsky started his team’s first preseason game at center on the third line. He finished that game with an assist and a missed attempt in the shootout.

In his second game, his highlight was a spectacular goal after winning a battle along the boards.
A promotion to the 2nd line for Zharovsky
In his 3rd game, the 34th overall pick of the 2025 draft found himself centering the second line.
He played over 18 minutes and even saw time on the power play. What’s interesting here is that during this game, he won more faceoffs than he lost.
Enough to make several people raise their eyebrows.
It will be interesting to see the young man’s progression over the next year. If the Canadiens can indirectly see a player develop at a position that is not for everyone, it would be a huge bonus.
Especially if he has good moments at that position.
But unfortunately, Alexander Zharovsky will temporarily be sidelined with an injury to start the KHL season. Early reports suggest it may only be a few games, but his progress will be closely watched.
