The air inside the Videotron Centre was thick with anticipation as the Montreal Canadiens faced off against the Ottawa Senators, but what unfolded on the ice was far from a typical preseason matchup.
While fans were treated to flashes of brilliance from the Canadiens’ young stars, the night took a dramatic turn that left everyone in shock.
A single, violent slash from Nick Cousins sent Ivan Demidov—one of Montreal’s most promising talents—off the ice, shifting the mood from excitement to outrage in an instant.
What happened next was even more compelling. Head coach Martin St-Louis, usually reserved and composed, erupted in defense of his player, delivering a passionate condemnation of Cousins’ actions that reverberated throughout the hockey world.
His words at the press conference were direct and unfiltered, raising serious questions about respect, sportsmanship, and player safety—even in games that are supposed to be just a warm-up for the season ahead.
But as the dust settles and emotions run high, fans and analysts alike are left wondering: Will the NHL take action? What will this mean for Demidov’s future—and for Cousins’ reputation? Dive into the full story to uncover the details behind the controversy and the fallout that could shape both teams moving forward.

In a game between the Montreal Canadiens and the Ottawa Senators, Martin St-Louis exploded after Nick Cousins’ dirty hit on Ivan Demidov, he didn’t mince his words.
The Videotron Centre saw a very emotional game last night, including many great plays from the Canadiens.
However, everything changed when Ivan Demidov was struck on the hand by a violent one-handed slash from Nick Cousins.
The young Russian forward suddenly left the game after the dirty play.
Martin St-Louis condemns the action and strongly defends Ivan Demidov
At the press conference, Martin St-Louis didn’t hesitate for a single second to denounce this kind of action, especially in a simple preseason game.
“There’s no need for that. It’s an exhibition game, both teams are trying to get ready for a long season. I don’t think there’s any need for that in the game.”

Habs coach Marty St. Louis when asked about the dirty Nick Cousins slash on Ivan Demidov:

And he’s not wrong.
A young player like Demidov, who is seen as a cornerstone of the Canadiens’ future, shouldn’t have to fear that kind of hit when he doesn’t even have the puck.
I have to admit I’m very, very frustrated with Cousins. It was a cheap shot.
One thing’s for sure, Canadiens fans will let him know what they think the next time he comes to the Bell Centre.
It remains to be seen if the NHL will decide to review the play. I really like seeing the head coach come to the defense of his players like that.
