For nearly a decade, Mitch Marner’s name was synonymous with Toronto hockey—an icon on the ice, a hometown hero off it. But behind the bright lights and roaring crowds, Marner’s journey has been marked by challenges far more complex than most fans ever imagined.
Now, after a headline-grabbing sign-and-trade deal that sent him to the Vegas Golden Knights, Marner is finally opening up about the “dark times” that shadowed his final years in Toronto.

Yet, as Marner prepares to start fresh in Vegas, the questions linger: What truly happened behind closed doors in Toronto? How did controversy, fan pressure, and unexpected tragedies shape one of hockey’s brightest stars?

Mitch Marner elaborated on the dark times he went through in Toronto, with Dan Robson of the New York Times, and after a sign-and-trade deal with the Vegas Golden Knights, you can tell he is more than excited about his future prospects.
Mitch Marner began his career in the NHL with the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he’d spend his first nine seasons. This postseason, he’d be traded to the Vegas Golden Knights after signing an 8-year contract with the Maple Leafs on July 1st.
In a recent article penned by Dan Robson of the New York Times, you can tell he’s enthused about the prospects of playing for the Golden Knights.
Robson gave us a chronological order of events in Toronto, with the last line being the most harrowing of all.
«At 4 years old, he was named an «athlete of the week» by Toronto’s City TV newscast. At 11, he was featured in a short CBC documentary focusing on hockey families, his father Paul’s intensity captured as he videotaped the action from the stands,» writes Dobson, before recalling when he first met Marner, whose family house had just gone up in flames.
«I stood outside the London Knights locker room with his mother, Bonnie, while she showed him a video of the blaze after he played the first game of the 2016 OHL Championship.
«Within an hour, before that story was posted, footage of Marner’s burning house led newscasts in Toronto.»
In Las Vegas, I spoke with Mitch Marner about fatherhood and new beginnings.
Here’s my story about why his move from Toronto was about much more than most people realize.

Mitch Marner’s Fresh Start with the Vegas Golden Knights
Marner is eager to begin the 2025-26 season with the Vegas Golden Knights, with the Mike Babcock controversy being one of many issues he’d have to face down. Along with irate fans who began to invade his privacy last season.
Needless to say, he’s excited to get a fresh start where no one knows him, aside from hockey fans, of course.
«It feels a lot lighter, in a way,» Marner said, of this new beginning. «There were some dark times in the last couple of years.»
Now, Marner will be able to contend for a Stanley Cup with a team that won the Stanley Cup in 2023.
