The New York Yankees have done an impressive job of filling their roster gaps after superstar outfielder Juan Soto signed with the New York Mets in free agency. The only void they haven’t yet addressed is the one left by Gleyber Torres, who signed with the Detroit Tigers.
As a result, the Yankees are now in search of an infielder to replace him. According to MLB.com’s John Denton, the Yankees could enter the trade market for veteran third baseman Nolan Arenado of the St. Louis Cardinals.
However, Arenado’s hefty contract has made him difficult for the Cardinals to move.

Nolan Arenado
“A major obstacle in any potential Arenado trade could be how much of the $64 million left on his contract the Cardinals are willing to cover,” Denton explained.
“Initial trade discussions in early January broke down when the Cardinals refused to pay up to $20 million of the contract’s remaining balance, a source said.
After seeing little progress in trade talks throughout January, the Cardinals revisited discussions with the Red Sox, Yankees, and Dodgers about potential restructured deals for the star third baseman.”
For the Yankees, this trade would be a dream scenario. They could potentially acquire Arenado at a relatively low cost, as the Cardinals would likely be eager to absorb a significant portion of his contract just to move on.
If St. Louis were to cover half of Arenado’s remaining deal, the Yankees could likely land him for a prospect ranked in the lower half of their top 30. This would be a massive win for Aaron Boone and the Yankees.
