The icy glow of Scotiabank Saddledome reflects off the glass as Marc Savard, once a power play architect for the Toronto Maple Leafs, sits on the Calgary Flames bench, his gaze steady but unreadable. Just days ago, his world flipped—Toronto’s blue and white gave way to a new shade of uncertainty, and the hockey world watched as one of its most talked-about assistant coaches was shown the door. But if anyone expected Savard to sulk in the shadows of his firing, they were in for a surprise.
With a single tap on his phone, Savard set the internet ablaze. A cheeky social media post—his new profile picture, not in Maple Leafs gear, but in the iconic black and gold of the Boston Bruins, a franchise where he once played with heart and grit. The caption was simple, almost mischievous: #NewProfilePic. The message was crystal clear to those who knew how to read between the lines. Savard wasn’t looking back. He was reclaiming his past, tossing aside the weight of Toronto’s struggles and embracing the comfort of old allegiances.
Fans erupted. Some jeered at his swift exit from the Leafs, others cheered his return—at least in spirit—to Beantown. Was this a dig at the team that let him go? A subtle jab at the organization whose power play woes became his undoing? Or was it simply a man finding solace in familiar colors after a turbulent stint in the hockey spotlight?
The timing couldn’t have been more dramatic. Toronto’s power play, once the league’s worst under Savard’s guidance, had suddenly caught fire with new blood behind the bench. Steve Sullivan, a former player and Marlies assistant, stepped in and sparked an immediate turnaround. Three power play goals in two games—numbers that spoke volumes, especially when compared to the Leafs’ previous drought. The city was quick to move on, and so, it seemed, was Savard.
Yet, beneath the surface of social media banter and fan debates, a deeper story unfolded. Savard’s tenure in Toronto was never just about missed opportunities or failed strategies. He became a scapegoat in a season wracked by bigger problems—a coach with a roster full of stars but no magic formula to fix what was broken. Now, with the noise of criticism fading and the pressure off his shoulders, Savard’s playful post hinted at something more: a man at peace with his fate, ready to close one chapter and, perhaps, begin another.
Will he coach again, maybe even return to the Bruins in a new role? That question lingers, unanswered, as fans and insiders speculate. For now, Savard’s digital wink to Boston has everyone talking, dissecting every pixel and word for clues about his next move. One thing is certain: Marc Savard isn’t hiding. He’s rewriting his narrative, one post at a time.
As the hockey world spins with rumors and reactions, all eyes remain on Savard—waiting to see where his journey leads next, and whether his bold, unexpected move is just the beginning of a new story.

Former Toronto Maple Leafs assistant coach Marc Savard was quick to change allegiances after a new social media post appeared to show he’s moved on from his firing.
When the Maple Leafs fired Marc Savard, it wasn’t personal. It was strictly a business decision due to Toronto holding the league’s worst power play and Savard; who was in control of it, wasn’t able to get them out of their worsening rut.
Since then, the team has brought in former player and Marlies assistant Steve Sullivan and have seen a wealth of success so far, with three power play goals in their last two, compared to two since the beginning of December.
Marc Savard quickly a Boston fan again
Fans are quickly over the Savard era and are bidding good riddance to the former assistant and it seems like he’s doing the exact same thing.
In a new post on Savard’s personal X account, he posted a photo of him playing for the Boston Bruins way back when and captioned it quite cheekily:

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out this is clearly a shot at the Maple Leafs and the fact that Savard would rather forget his tenure there and move onto his old team; at least as a fan for now.
Fans having a field day with Marc Savard’s post
There’s no word on whether or not Savard would be getting a coaching job again either with the Bruins or elsewhere, however it’s a sign that if there were any regrets about his time in Toronto; they are few and far between.
Fans are also poking fun at Savard’s post, with many of them commenting either about his time in Toronto, and some wish he could come back to Beantown:
Call Savard a scapegoat, or a small issue in a much bigger scope of problems but the fact remains that he was ineffective this season with a whole whack of stars at his disposal. Sullivan has come in and while it hasn’t been perfect, the new-look power play at least has energy.
For now, Savard should probably take a little bit of a breather and get away from all the noise for a bit before getting another coaching job. It’s not that he’s necessarily a terrible coach, but he might not be suitable to run a power play.
Whether he gets that job or not in the future remains to be seen but it looks like he’s got no issues with being let go from the Maple Leafs which was probably the right call anyways.
