In a fiery showdown that has the hockey world buzzing, former NHL star and outspoken host Ryan Whitney just threw gasoline on the Montreal Canadiens’ latest controversy! After a heated loss to the Edmonton Oilers on October 23, 2025, at Rogers Place, Whitney took aim at Canadiens fans with a scathing message that’s sparked a firestorm.

His bold claim that Montreal is “still crying” over referee calls has ignited fierce reactions, but is he fanning the flames of truth or just stirring the pot? The game saw questionable officiating, with even Brendan Gallagher revealing that referees admitted to botched calls, including a controversial penalty on Juraj Slafkovsky.

Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis didn’t hold back either, subtly jabbing the NHL’s officiating process. Fans and analysts alike are divided—did the refs lose control, or is Montreal just sore about a tough defeat? Whitney’s comments have only amplified the drama, leaving everyone wondering: will the league address the refereeing chaos, or is this just another chapter in the Canadiens’ storied rivalry with the Oilers? Dive into the full story to uncover the shocking details, heated reactions, and what’s next for a team under fire!

Former National Hockey League player and very popular host Ryan Whitney just sent a message to Montreal Canadiens fans.

He really just helped Gary Bettman, after the referees looked a bit ridiculous last night, and he directed his message straight to Montreal.

“The city of Montreal is still crying about losing to the Oilers!

In the history of the NHL no one has gotten more calls than the Habs and these fans can’t get over the Oilers getting a couple calls in their favor last night.

Work on your PK!”

– Ryan Whitney

Whitney literally added fuel to the fire with these comments.

A message that sparked reactions among Montreal Canadiens fans

It’s a good time to remember that it wasn’t just Canadiens fans who complained about the refereeing in last night’s game.

Many analysts (even those covering other NHL teams) had the exact same reaction as all of us.

The referees really lost control last night! They even in a way admitted it themselves as revealed Brendan Gallagher.

“Brendan Gallagher said the officials admitted they made a mistake on the call on Slafkovsky and he felt the call on Anderson was because the official felt Anderson showed him up.

“He didn’t,” Gallagher said.”

At this point, let’s just hope the league can fix things and that it doesn’t happen too often!

Canadiens head coach Martin St-Louis also got involved and made some comments targeting NHL referees:

“We watch video and we try to get better as a group. I hope the league has the same process as coaches do,” says Martin St. Louis

I can’t believe Gary Bettman was proud to see that last night.
