Sunrise star Mark Beretta has suffered a heartbreaking family tragedy.

The beloved sports reporter, 58, shared the sad news of his father’s death in a heartfelt Instagram post on Wednesday.

Mark explained his father, David Andrew Beretta, died at age 87 on September 28.

‘Kind, generous, adventurous, good fun, hard working, and loving,’ he wrote in the caption alongside a series of images of his dad.

‘We’ll miss his boundless energy and support. 60 magnificent years of marriage to Mum, together through thick and thin,’ he continued.

‘I’ll think about the good times every day. A top bloke and a solid mate. I’ll always be proud of being Dave’s son.’

The comments were inundated with supportive comments from Mark’s famous friends.

‘I’m so deeply sorry to hear this mate. Cracking photos & a loving tribute to a great man’ wrote Sunrise weatherman Sam Mac.

‘I’m so glad you got that time together and you’ve been there for your beautiful mum too. Sending big love from my family to yours. See you soon.’

Co-star Edwina Bartholomew chimed in: ‘That photo with the scuba suit. Could be you, Beretts. Sending so much love.’

Larry Emdur said: ‘Ohhhh mate, this is so sad, I know how close you were. This relationship was so special. Sending you and the family lots and lots of love.’

‘Sounds like he was a wonderful man, husband, dad and grandpa. May the beautiful family he raised be of comfort to one another. Big hugs,’ wrote Kylie Gillies.

It comes after Mark shared the happy news that he has become a grandfather.

His daughter Ava, 21, and her partner welcomed their first child, Arlo, last year.

‘Being a grandad is just the best. The love you feel is something else,’ he said.

‘I do like to think I’m the coolest grandad ever – and I’m trying to teach Arlo to say “cool Pa”, but I haven’t succeeded yet.’

Beretta shares daughter Ava with ex-wife of 22 years Rachael, as well as son Ben, 18.

The couple, who married in 2001, confirmed they quietly parted ways via a statement in October 2023.

‘At the start of the year, after a great deal of reflection and 22 years of marriage, Rach and I came to the conclusion that a separation was best for us,’ Beretta told Daily Mail Australia through a Seven spokesperson.

‘We remain good friends, and our two children and grandchild remain our focus and priority as we move forward with love, dignity, and respect.’

There were signs of trouble leading up to the split, with the pair placing their Mosman home on the market in February of that year.
