Sidney Crosby is one of the greatest players in NHL history, and now he’s passed the iconic Mario Lemieux for an incredible Pittsburgh Penguins record.
For years now, Sidney Crosby has continued growing his legacy with the Pittsburgh Penguins, and with three Stanley Cups under his belt, he’s arguably the greatest player in franchise history already.
That’s a steep mountain to climb however, as ‘Super Mario’ Lemieux is regarded as the Penguins current greatest, but as of late, Crosby has been racking up records that puts himself alongside No. 66 among the best in franchise history.
Crosby passes Lemieux for major Penguins record
Last season, Crosby passed Wayne Gretzky for the most point-per-game seasons in the history of the National Hockey League, tallying his 20th in 2024/25 despite the struggles from the team overall, and now, he’s passed fellow Penguins icon Lemieux for another.

According to the Penguins official release on social media, Crosby now has the most combined points between the regular season and Stanley Cup Playoffs in franchise history (1,896), passing Lemieux (1,895) in the process.
Most points in Penguins history, regular season and playoffs combined:
1️⃣ Sidney Crosby – 1,896
2️⃣ Mario Lemieux – 1,895
3️⃣ Evgeni Malkin – 1,535
4️⃣ Jaromír Jágr – 1,226
5️⃣ Kris Letang – 864Sid the Kid stands alone now 🐐

Clearly, post-season success and longevity play a major role in Crosby getting to this record, with many seeing Lemieux’s health issues that kept him out of the NHL for several years as holding him back from being considered the greatest player in league history.
Ultimately, both Lemieux and Crosby are considered icons in the history of the Penguins franchise, bringing multiple Stanley Cups and years of success to the organization, but with Crosby now producing more total points in franchise history than Lemieux, it may be time for fans to start taking the arguments about the two seriously.
