Nine News Sydney viewers will notice the absence of a familiar face in the coming weeks, as veteran newsreader Peter Overton recovers from a serious injury.

The popular 59-year-old anchor recently suffered a nasty fall at home, resulting in a severely injured wrist.

The damage was so significant it required a gruelling four-hour surgery involving a bone graft, three metal plates, and multiple screws.

The news was shared by his wife, journalist and podcast host Jessica Rowe, in a heartfelt social media post on Saturday night.

‘Never a dull moment in our house!’ she wrote, revealing the extent of her husband’s injury.

‘What with Allegra finishing her HSC & the chaos that can be daily life, Petee recently had a nasty fall at home, badly injuring his wrist.’

Rowe, 55, added that Overton is now under ‘strict instructions to rest & recover,’ and that it will be ‘some time before he’s back on screen’.

She reassured that he’s already eager to return to the news desk.

Rowe also praised the medical team looking after her husband.

‘A special shout out to our healthcare system, the emergency nurses, physios, doctors & specialist surgeons who are the most remarkable, caring & compassionate people,’ she said.

‘We are very lucky.’

The update prompted an outpouring of support from fellow media personalities and fans alike.

‘Ouch! Hang in there!’ wrote Terri Irwin.

Married at First Sight star Domenica Calarca added: ‘Oh no, poor Pete!!!! Have been missing him on my screen! Sending love and healing.’

Fellow Nine presenter Richard Wilkins also relayed his thoughts: ‘Hang in there Pete… Happy healing!! No more pirouettes for us!! Anything, anytime… Love to all.’

American comedian and actress Rosie O’Donnell, fresh off her recent tour of Australia, also sent her well wishes.
