Longtime reality TV fans were thrilled last year when it was announced that Big Brother Australia would be returning to Channel 10 in 2025 with a brand new host and updated format. The network promised “the authentic, OG show you fell in love with all those years ago”, with live nominations, live evictions, 24/7 streaming, and filming taking place in Dreamworld on the Gold Coast.
The upcoming reboot, hosted by radio host and The Cheap Seats star Mel Tracina, will be the fourth iteration of the long-running series. Big Brother Australia originally aired on Channel 10 from 2001 to 2008, before moving to Channel 9 from 2012 to 2014, and Channel 7 from 2020 to 2023.
While fans have expressed plenty of excitement on social media ahead of the show’s launch on Sunday, 9 November, Channel 10 has confirmed this week that a few elements from the original series won’t be making a return.
Will Big Brother Uncut return?
10’s executive producer Sarah Thornton told TV Tonight that there will be no Big Brother Uncut — a companion program that showcased adult content at a later timeslot — or Friday Night Games.
“There’s no Friday Night Games, but we do have some excitement in store for Friday night that I think will appeal to the viewers who love Friday Night Games,” she said.
Sarah explained that the livestream, which will be on delay so producers can watch out for defamation or classification, won’t be “over-produced”, but will still be “reflective of the values of the main show”.
“There’ll be flashes of people hopping into showers and stuff. But that’s not the focus of the live stream by any means,” she detailed.
Is the show actually live?
A Channel 10 spokesperson confirmed to the publication that the premiere episode will feature content from a live-studio audience that was recorded the day before.
However, “all other audience recordings will air in real time”, including the live grand final, and the daily show will feature the events from the house over the last 24 hours.
The nominations and evictions will also air live, and the livestream will commence following the premiere.
How long will the season run?
Channel 10 has yet to confirm how long the series will run, although it’s expected to conclude in late December.
If so, this would make it the shortest season to air on the network, as earlier seasons ran for 85 to 100 days.
However, the final season to air on Channel 7 in 2023 was filmed over just 25 days, which is the shortest non-celebrity season in the show’s history.
