Nicole Kidman is named the newest ambassador of Chanel

The Oscar winner has a long history of working with the French fashion house, dating back two-plus decades

Kidman’s latest venture comes less than one week after she filed for divorce from her husband, Keith Urban

Nicole Kidman is stepping into a new role, but this time, it’s not on the big screen.

The Academy Award-winning actress, 58, was named the newest ambassador of Chanel, first announced by WWD on Monday, Oct. 6, and will attend the fashion house’s first show from creative director Matthieu Blazy in Paris later today.

“As someone who has such an appreciation for haute couture, I am so looking forward to witnessing Matthieu’s vision for the oldest haute couture house still in operation and having the opportunity to wear what I know will be gorgeous creations,” she said in a statement to WWD.

Kidman continued, “Chanel has always been ahead of the curve, shining a smart and gracious light on women, and I am sure Matthieu will be no exception, just like Karl did in his time.”

Kidman’s new venture with the French luxury fashion house, which was founded in 1910 by Coco Chanel in Paris, comes less than one week after she filed for divorce from Keith Urban on Tuesday, Sept. 30.

“Nicole is honoring her work commitments, as is Keith,” a source tells PEOPLE exclusively of the actress and 57-year-old country musician.

Kidman has a long history of collaborations with Chanel that date back over two decades.

In 2003, the Babygirl actress was famously named the face of the iconic brand for its Chanel No. 5 perfume.

As part of the collaboration with Chanel at the time, Kidman appeared in the corresponding No. 5 the Film, which was released in 2004. It was a 180-second short film directed by Baz Luhrmann, which she starred in opposite actor Rodrigo Santoro.

Kidman attended the 2023 Met Gala in the same dress she wore in the 2004 Chanel No. 5 ad for a date night with her then-husband Urban. The theme that year was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.”

The Big Little Lies actress’ dress paid tribute to the late German designer, stepping out in the exact pink tulle gown that she wore when she starred in the Luhrmann-helmed commercial nearly a decade later.

“This dress was worn in the Chanel No. 5 commercial that Baz Luhrmann and I did with Karl, who concocted this out of his head,” she told host La La Anthony on the red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City in May that year.

“I suppose the way these couture gowns last is because of their exquisiteness,” Kidman added, of the vintage dress. “If you take care of them and love them, they are timeless.”

“To be able to wear the same thing 20 years later and it still holds…There’s whimsy to it,” she continued. “It’s a feather and it’s unbelievably comfortable, but it’s all handmade, it’s couture and that’s what it should be.”

The dress, of course, was designed by Chanel.

It was embellished with 250 pink feathers and 3,000 sequins, completed by a four-meter train. Kidman topped the look with a dainty black bow that hung delicately from her long, golden locks.

As for her jewelry, the actress opted for Winston Cluster diamond chandelier earrings, which were approximately 16.64 carats and set in platinum. She topped the look off with a sparkling cluster diamond ring that was seen as she held hands with Urban.

Recently, Kidman’s daughter Sunday Rose, 17, was photographed at an intimate Chanel dinner celebrating the launch of Sofia Coppola’s new book Chanel Haute Couture on Sept. 11.

The actress shares Sunday and daughter, Faith Margaret, 14, with Urban.

On Oct 4, Kidman stepped out for the first time four days after she filed for divorce from Urban.

She attended amFAR’s Dallas auction in Texas, which was held in support of the nonprofit’s work to support AIDS research and prevent the spread of HIV worldwide.

News first broke Monday, Sept. 29, that Kidman and country musician separated in early summer after 19 years of marriage. They married in 2006.

When Kidman filed for divorce on Sept. 30, she cited irreconcilable differences and listed the former couple’s date of separation as the time of filing.

Kidman asked to be the primary residential parent in the custody agreement as part of the divorce filing.

On Sept. 29, an insider told PEOPLE that Kidman had been “fighting to save the marriage,” even amid the pair’s private separation in recent months.
