A magazine interview Nicole Kidman gave just weeks before her split from Keith Urban became headline news contained a subtle but striking clue about her marriage breakdown.

Nicole Kidman appeared to hint at her marriage troubles with Keith Urban in comments to Vogue magazine just weeks before news of their divorce shocked the entertainment world.

The 58-year-old Oscar winner fronts the cover of Vogue’s November 2025 issue, as part of a feature written by journalist Wendell Steavenson.

In the online version of the article that went live on Wednesday, the writer said he had already sensed something was up during their sit-down but chose “not to pry.”

Steavenson wrote that when he asked Kidman how she felt in her 50s, he expected “a nice trite response about the sagacity of age”.

Instead, the actress was “wry, rueful, unsure of herself.”

“She said: ‘How many times do you have to be taught that you think you know where your life is going and then it isn’t going in that direction?’” he wrote.

Just a few weeks after that exchange, Kidman filed for divorce from her husband of 19 years, citing “irreconcilable differences.”

Reports suggest the couple had been living apart since June.

According to insiders, Kidman had been determined to preserve their marriage and protect their family, including daughters Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14.

“Nicole has always believed that her marriage with Keith was for life-  even if months went by without them seeing each other due to each other’s work schedules,” a source told celebrity blogger Deuxmoi.

“Irrespective of ‘distractions elsewhere’ (i.e. on-set or touring entanglements), Kidman saw their union as a forever type of commitment.”

It’s understood the 57-year-old country singer initiated the split, telling Kidman he was “unhappy” and had already moved on with another woman.

The same source said Urban felt “there’s still plenty of time for them to live their lives” and that one shouldn’t “waste it with someone you no longer feel excitement or passion for.”

Despite the personal upheaval, Kidman told Vogue she had strong support from her Nashville circle- including neighbour Reese Witherspoon – as well as her friends at Vanderbilt Hospital, where she’s deeply involved in cancer research.

“Ride-or-die friendships. Oh, yeah,” she said, adding that life’s challenges often find their way into her art.

“I put it in my work. That’s the beauty of what I do. There’s a place for some of this to explode, implode, process, discover.”

Since filing for divorce, the Moulin Rouge! star has made several public appearances, including at the amFar Awards in Dallas and alongside her daughters at the Chanel Spring/Summer 2026 show in Paris on Monday.

Kidman, who described herself as an “open” person in her Vogue feature, shared several behind-the-scenes photos from the shoot on social media, including one showing her slumped over in a voluminous gown.

“Immensely grateful to Anna and the entire team at @VogueMagazine #WendellSteavenson @SergioKletnoy – #VogueWorld,” she captioned the post, which racked up more than 77,000 likes in just five hours.

Famous friends rushed to the comments, with Naomi Watts writing “Iconic” and Vanessa Amorosi adding “Stunning”.
