A Block insider has revealed who was missing from this year’s disaster auction – as one pair of contestants made a wild claim about their $100,000 prize money.
The Block stars Robby Lippett and Mat Johnson have broken their silence on their disappointing auction day result, revealing their prize money failed to cover their costs.
The friends walked away with $109,999, but admitted they expected their house, in the rural Victorian town of Daylesford, to fetch a much higher prize during the finale of the Channel Nine series.
Despite being branded “greedy” by The Block viewers over their reaction to the sale, the friends explained they, in fact, lost money by taking part in the reno show.

‘It’s not great, but it is what it is. It’s not about the money… but it’s about the money. Just to cover my costs for not being in the business or the work I said no to, it wouldn’t even cover that,’ Mr Johnson told 9Entertainment.
Mr Lippett and Mr Johnson confirmed they would be splitting the profit equally and walking away with just under $55,000 each.
‘It sucks. It’s a lot of hard work that we put in, but it’s a beautiful house and I’m sure the buyer and all his guests are going to enjoy it a lot,’ Mr Lippett said.
The friends were not the only contestants to experience a disappointing auction day with both Emma and Ben, and Han and Can finishing the day without making a penny.

Sonny and Alicia were lucky enough to sell their home for $3.06million – $120,000 over their reserve of $2.94million, but this profit was still far below the huge sums viewers have seen in previous seasons of the reno show.
The winning couple Britt and Taz were the only contestants who walked away from the show with an impressive prize after selling their house for a whopping $3.4million – $420,000 over their reserve of $2.99million and earning a $100,000 bonus prize.
Serial auctioneer David Holmes has revealed exactly why the auction day failed to win over the bidders.
He explained the crucial missing ingredient was mum and dad buyers.
“I think next year, break it down and look at going, ‘Hey, how do we re-engage Mum and Dad, blue collar entry-level investors into this sort of program?” Mr Holmes told realestate.com.au
“How do we get the mum and dad buyers back because without [Adrian] Portelli, without Danny [Wallis], who is there really? And without [buyer’s agent] Frank Valentic – who is buying this property?
“It needs to appeal more to most of Australia.”
