Sam and Lara Worthington have become one of Australia’s most enduring showbiz couples.

The Australian actor, 49, first met model Lara Bingle, 38, around 12 years ago, and the rest, as the saying goes, is history!

Sam might have conquered Hollywood, starring in all three Avatar movies as Jake Sully, but he has described his decade-long marriage to Lara as his “biggest achievement”.

They mostly keep their relationship and family life private, but have shared the odd detail about their relationship with fans over the years.

So, how did the Australian couple meet, and what are the secrets to their happy marriage?

When did Sam and Lara Worthington meet?

Sam first met Lara (née Bingle) when he was enjoying a trip to New York with a group of friends, including Gerard Butler, in 2013.

In a chance encounter, they bumped into one another at a festival in Central Park, where Lara was attending a Cotton On event.

It was love at first sight for the couple, who quickly began dating, with news of their romance emerging publicly soon after.

When did Sam and Lara Worthington get married?

The happy couple officially tied the knot at a small and private ceremony in Melbourne on December 28, 2014.

“It was very intimate,” Lara previously told radio hosts Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson about the special day.

“We just popped into Melbourne, where Sam’s family’s from, and there was just our family – less than 10 people.”

At the time, Lara was seven months pregnant with their first child, something she admitted came with its challenges, particularly finding a wedding dress.
“I don’t recommend being pregnant and getting married,” she previously quipped.

Lara is known for being notoriously private, so it wasn’t unexpected when there were no official photographs of the wedding.

However, almost 10 years later, Lara finally spoke about the dress she had worn on her special day, after years of speculation that it was a white lace Louis Vuitton gown.

Confirming the rumours in a chat with our sister publication Marie Claire, Lara said, “I bought it in London a couple of days before we were about to get married.”

Sam and Lara appear to have an unbreakable bond; however, it hasn’t always been easy for the couple.

In 2022, Sam opened up about his problem with addiction, revealing that after the success of Avatar in 2009, he began drinking heavily.

Sam eventually got sober and credited Lara for helping him through that time.

“I couldn’t see it. I thought it was normal,” he has previously shared with Variety. “I didn’t like who I was. Drinking helped me get through the day.”

Lara eventually gave Sam an ultimatum: “You can do what you want, but I don’t need to be around this.”

This was enough to push Sam to overcome his addiction, and as of 2022, he had been sober for eight years.

The couple celebrated 10 years of marriage in 2024, which Sam sweetly described as his “biggest achievement”.

“My biggest achievement is the 10 years with my wife,” Sam told Today at the 2024 GQ Australia Men of the Year Awards.

How many kids do Sam and Lara Worthington have?

Sam and Lara live in New York, where they are raising their three beautiful children.

Their firstborn, Rocket Zot, was born on March 24, 2014, shortly after they got married.

Rocket then became a big brother in October 2016 with the birth of Racer, followed by River in early 2020.

They like to keep their children out of the public eye; in fact, their boys are unaware of the fact that their parents are even famous!

“At the moment, they think my job is Dad, and that’s all that matters,” Sam said during an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show in 2022.

What happened between Lara Bingle and Michael Clarke?

Before finding love with Sam, Lara was famously engaged to cricketer Michael Clarke.

The couple began dating in 2007, after meeting on the set of the now-defunct reality TV show Torvill and Dean’s Dancing on Ice.

They got engaged in March the following year during a romantic holiday in New York.

However, in 2010, their relationship came to an end, with their separation making headlines at the time.

Following their split, there were rumours that Lara’s $200,000 engagement ring had been flushed down the toilet at their Bondi home.

However, Michael later told 60 Minutes that the rumours were categorically untrue.

“I’d like to say I’m a very silly man. But I’m not that silly. I’m not throwing any diamond ring down a toilet,” he said.
