EXCLUSIVE: Domain’s National Property Editor, Alice Stolz, tells Yahoo Lifestyle how the edit can affect The Block teams this year.

Every year on The Block, there is usually one (or more) teams that receive somewhat of a ‘villain edit’, which doesn’t show them in the best light to viewers, all in the name of drama. Because, as viewers, let’s be honest, we all love a bit of drama.
But how much does that drama affect the teams on the show? Well, last year’s ‘villains’, Kylie and Brad — who were accused of “bullying” their co-stars Maddy and Charlotte throughout the season — saw their profit take a hit as they came last in the auction.
The pair still won a considerable sum of money, walking away with $650,000, while Maddy and Charlotte scored a cool one million dollars more than that with a massive profit of $1.65m (but no apology from Kylie and Brad).
Meanwhile, the 2023 ‘villains’, Kristy and Brett, walked away with just $65,000. Again, not nothing, but much less than they expected.
Does The Block’s editing have an impact on the auctions?
Now, The Block insider, Alice Stolz, has revealed to Yahoo Lifestyle that while she believes “it’s so easy to get caught up” in the drama, she’s hopeful buyers would look past that.
“The price guides for these houses are $3 million plus at the moment, this is not nothing money,” she said.
“And I think that a buyer is looking at a much bigger picture, let alone who built the house and all the drama that unfolded in it.
“I think you only have to look around the country that every weekend, thousands and thousands of people buy properties and have no idea about the background of the person who built it, who lived in it, even sometimes, what even happened in the house.”

Alice added that she thought the “property exchange is bigger than the contestants”, but noted that fan favourites Steph and Gian, who won $1.75m on the show, had a lot of success because they lived in the house and marketed it as though it was their full-time job.
Referencing Han and Can from House 2, who haven’t received the most positive of edits, Alice said that buyers who have seen the house really love it.
“At the Open for Inspection event, watching buyers come in and, you know, obviously Han and Can have sort of faced criticism in the past about parts of their house, but many of the buyers just saw this incredibly epic kitchen in their mind and were just bowled over by it.
“So I think we can all live in our own world about The Block a lot, but that’s the fascinating thing.
“You actually see real buyers walk through, and they respond to things very differently than I think anyone expects.”
Alice added that the challenge for the contestants is to take on feedback while also “sticking to your guns”.
She explained that she believed a lot of buyers wanted “city style luxury in the countryside”, and this is where Han and Can could possibly shine with buyers.
However, a poll of Yahoo Lifestyle readers currently has Han and Can as the least likely to win The Block, with just three per cent of votes.
Fan favourites Britt and Taz are in the lead with 52 per cent of the votes, while Robby and Matt are coming second with 23 per cent, then Emma and Ben with 17 per cent, and Sonny and Alicia, who came last with five per cent.
