EXCLUSIVE: Directly after The Block‘s shock Daylesford auctions, host Scott Cam admitted he was “gutted some of the houses didn’t sell.”
“It seems selling five houses on the same day in Daylesford was possibly a bit of a tall order,” he admitted. “It’s a regional town as well.”
The host was clearly shattered as he rode the “big highs and low lows” with every couple on a day that saw two houses passed in and the winners walk away $420,000 over reserve.

“I think Scotty’s pretty upset,” Britt and Taz told 9Entertainment afterwards. “He loved us all equally. To see what he thought was his best season and two houses passed in and two made under $150,000… it hurts. He’s pretty sad.”
Scott revealed he doesn’t find out the reserves until the contestants do – and he was stunned by this year’s figures.
“As usual, every single year, I think it’s too high,” he told 9Entertainment. “As do the contestants, because again, we want them to sell.”
However, he pointed out that after more than 20 seasons of The Block, no one is ever happy with their reserve price.

“But then after the first auction I go, ‘well, maybe I was wrong again.’ They were pretty spot on.”
He added that despite initial concerns, “Britt and Taz’s house sold for $420,000 over that.”

He also noted that “the room didn’t have much money above three million bucks after that.”
Scott added that because the public didn’t know the reserve prices ahead of time, the figures wouldn’t have scared anyone off – and with a publicly shared price guide around $3 million, the buyers ultimately couldn’t have been entirely shocked.
He dismissed suggestions that Adrian Portelli’s absence hurt the auctions, revealing that Adrian was technically “in the room,” with his buyer’s agent spotted during House 2’s (Han and Can’s) auction.
“We went nearly half a million bucks over reserve without Adrian Portelli,” Scott said. “And in actual fact, ‘Adrian Portelli’ was in the room today, but he didn’t make any bids.”
Scott admitted last year’s wild auction and huge results were “a very unusual situation.”
“He went two million over reserve,” Scott said. “He just wanted to do a promotion. It was unrealistic, absolutely.
“Today was more realistic of what mums and dads are going through on weekends when they’re selling their homes. Some are successful and some not so much.”

Scott confirmed it was Adrian’s choice not to publicly return this year. “He chose not to come back,” he said. “We certainly didn’t bar him, because it’s a public auction and you can’t bar anyone. We were happy for Adrian to buy a house, for sure.”
At the conclusion of the auctions, two houses remain available – not the result anyone wanted, Scotty included.
“We live with them for three months and we want them to be successful, and unfortunately, some weren’t,” he said.
“But they’ve got the opportunity to be rewarded for their hard work as their houses go back on the market first thing tomorrow morning. We’ve got two and a half million viewers watching that show, so we’ve got plenty of potential buyers that will be aware that there’s two houses available.”
“Congratulations to Britt and Taz on their very well deserved win and the beautiful home they created.”
