Justin and Will were the fan favourites throughout this year’s My Kitchen Rules competition, so it was a very special moment when they were crowned the winners on Sunday night. The best friends told Yahoo Lifestyle that they were “over the moon”, and glad the wait to find out if they’d won or not was over.

It’s common practice these days for reality shows to shoot two different endings to prevent the winners from being leaked, so the boys found out last night at the same time as the rest of the country. Justin and Will shared that they attended a watch party with a lot of their former competitors, and the runner-up team, Maria and Bailey, so that whoever won, “someone was going to get celebrated”.

The boys have walked away with the $100,000 prize money, which they will split between them, and both joked that their wives likely have big plans for that money.

“If it’s not invested in the kids, it’ll be a holiday – Christmas is coming up,” Will said.

Justin added that he is welcoming his third baby boy in January, and joked that the new arrival would be “expensive”.

Justin and Will told Yahoo Lifestyle that the hardest part about the competition was the time spent practising their techniques while the cameras weren’t filming.

“The long nights where if we stuffed something up, we’d be like, ‘OK, back to Woolies, get the ingredients again, clean up, start again, restart the clock,’” Will said.

“Countless nights like that, where we were cooking past midnight, just practicing.

“We look back at it now, and yeah those parts were hard, but we were better prepared for the grand final.”

Justin added that they didn’t come to the reality TV show empty-handed.

“What people didn’t see, was we brought so many utensils away with us, we brought pasta makers, we brought spatulas, we brought cake tins – we brought everything away, in our luggage and I think that was our secret weapon – just to prepare,” he said.

The pair shared that the competition brought them much closer.

“I came in with a mate, then left with a brother,” Justin said.

Will joked that while he agreed with that sentiment, being brothers come with “way more arguments”.

Walking away from the experience, the boys urged those thinking of signing up to the show to go for it.

“Don’t think about it, just do it, because it’s one of the best experiences we’ve ever had – aside from having kids,” Justin said.

“We’ve been on the other side questioning do we do it or not, and to be where we are now, I now know what it means when people are saying, ‘Don’t wait, have a crack and apply yourself.’”
