Doechii’s real name is Jaylah Ji’mya Hickmon, born on August 14, 1998 in Tampa, Florida, USA. The female rapper comes from a family where her father and brother are both rappers, so she was exposed to Hip-hop from a young age.

When she was in high school, Doechii set her sights on the Howard W. Blake School of the Arts, which opened the door for the little girl to ballet, singing, cheerleading and gymnastics.

In 2016, Doechii released her first self-composed song on SoundCloud. By 2020, the female rapper began to become famous on TikTok with the single Yucky Blucky Fruitcake. In 2022 – 2023, Doechii went viral across the internet with Persuasive and What Is It (Block Boy).

Doechii developed a professional music career when she decided to sign a contract with Top Dawg Entertainment, joining the same house as superstars like Kendrick Lamar, SZA.

Doechii’s early days with music were extremely difficult. Like any young talent, Doechii had to find her own opportunities to “survive” in the harsh entertainment industry like America.

Having gone through enough shocks when she was only a teenager, Doechii clearly realized that she could not let herself be swept away. Currently, she focuses on music, avoiding alcohol and stimulants.

In an interview, Doechii emphasized, “My projects do not come from alcohol, beer, stimulants or parties. They come from the days of sitting barefoot in the studio, working with my eyes rolled back.”

2024 was a breakthrough year for Doechii, when she released her debut album Alligator Bites Never. The album was written from Doechii’s own experiences, making listeners sympathize and understand.

Alligator Bites Never Heal received 79/100 points on Metacritic (a site that aggregates music critics’ reviews). Rolling Stone magazine assessed Doechii’s versatility in rapping, influenced by the RnB style. Doechii believes that his rap music will be “the new Hip-hop”.

The effort was rewarded, Alligator Bites Never Heal was officially named in the Best Rap Album category at the 2025 Grammy. Doechii surpassed names like Eminem and J.Cole to bring home the first golden horn of her career. Accordingly, Doechii is the third female rapper in Grammy history to win the Best Rap Album award, after Lauryn Hill and Cardi B.
