NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal has been tabbed for an important role with a college basketball program.
O’Neal played his college ball at LSU, and currently, his son Shaqir is set to suit up for Sacramento State next season after playing at Florida A&M in 2024-25 and beginning his career at Texas Southern. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania. Shaq will now be working with the Sacramento State program.
The Hall of Fame big man has been hired as the team’s general manager, Charania reported Monday night.
“Shaquille O’Neal has agreed to become the men’s basketball general manager of Sacramento State,” Charania tweeted. “It will be a voluntary role for Shaq, whose son, Shaqir O’Neal, also plays for Sac State under Mike Bibby. Shaq and Bibby form a star duo as college GM and coach.”
O’Neal is the latest current or former pro athlete to get involved as a college general manager. Recently, we saw Stephen Curry hired for the same position at his alma mater, Davidson.

In football, Las Vegas Raiders star Maxx Crosby is now the assistant general manager at his former school, Eastern Michigan, while Stanford hired Andrew Luck to be its football GM.
Since moving to the Division I level in 1991-92, Sacramento State has only posted two winning seasons, going 16-14 in 2019-20 and 21-12 in 2014-15. The Hornets went 7-25 last season under interim head coach Michael Czepil.
However, with the hiring of Bibby, a former NBA star, and plans for new basketball facility on campus next fall, things are looking up for Sacramento State. We’ll see how much Shaq will be able to add to the program.
His son Shaqir is coming off a solid season at FAMU, having averaged 6.7 points and 3.4 rebounds in 18.1 minutes per game.
