The Gregg Popovich era has sadly come to an end for the San Antonio Spurs.

Gregg Popovich says he will not return to the Spurs this season, has hope of coaching in the future - The Press Democrat

On Friday afternoon, ESPN insider Shams Charania reported that Popovich is transitioning to a new role with the Spurs. He’ll be the team’s president of basketball operations. This decision was most likely made due to his health.

Popovich suffered a mild stroke on Nov. 2 and unfortunately didn’t return during the 2024-25 season. Mitch Johnson took over as San Antonio’s interim coach during his absence.

Even though Popovich wanted to return to the sidelines, ESPN’s report said he couldn’t deal with the “taxing grind of being an NBA head coach” any longer. For that reason, he stepped down from his position.

The Spurs will conduct a thorough search for their next head coach. That being said, one candidate has already emerged as a fan favorite.

ESPN’s Jay Williams suggested that Becky Hammon should be Popovich’s successor. She’s currently the head coach of the Las Vegas Aces.

“If the Spurs are serious about legacy, development, and modern leadership—Becky Hammon is the move,” Jay Williams said. “She’s learned under Pop, won titles on her own, and commands respect at every level. This isn’t about breaking barriers—it’s about hiring the most qualified leader for the Wemby era. Period.”

Williams isn’t the only person calling for the Spurs to hire Hammon. There are plenty of NBA fans who want to see her return to San Antonio.

“C’mon Spurs. Hire Becky Hammon! Just do it,” one fan said in response to the news.

“I will say, the Spurs should hire Becky Hammon back immediately. Pop trusted her more than just about anyone,” another person wrote.

“Is Becky Hammon the choice here for San Antonio? She was a part of Pop’s staff, established a winning culture in LV… I don’t think that’s too bad of a choice here,” a fan added.

Prior to becoming the head coach of the Aces in 2022, Hammon spent several years as an assistant coach for the Spurs. She developed a strong connection with Popovich.

If Popovich has the final say on San Antonio’s coaching decision, he might just pick Hammon. That is, of course, if she’s comfortable leaving the WNBA behind.
