During the NBA playoff matchup between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night, one top NBA announcer made a topical political joke.

As he was doing an ad read for an NBA-related sweepstakes, Kevin Harlan referenced the sweeping tariffs brought on by President Donald Trump in his second term as U.S. president.

“Members in the US and Canada who complete the challenge have the chance at a trip to the NBA Draft. No tariffs involved!,” Harlan said, barely able to contain his laughter as he ended the ad read.

“I just want our friends north of us to know there’s not a tariff issue that’s a surprise. I just want to make sure we’re informing everybody,”

NBA fans will know that this is far from the first time that Harlan has had fun on the air. A few weeks ago, the veteran sports broadcaster went viral for his humorous response to two blended ad reads, resulting in a spot for “CarMax chicken tenders.”

“Tonight from Madison Square Garden, the NBA on TNT is brought to you by the new crispy tenders at CarMax,” Harlan said, with all the professionalism of a respected broadcasting veteran.

“Wait a minute. Hold on. Hold on. Are they serving tenders with cars? Are there tenders in the car? We just had the marriage of two different sponsors, and it was ugly.”

Later in the game, Harlan was presented with another opportunity to reference the blended ad read, saying that CarMax was “the way car buying… and tenders should be.”

Harlan has had several viral moments during his broadcasting career, including calling two NFL games at the same time for a radio broadcast. He also narrated a cat running on the field during Monday Night Football, as well as a fan sprinting on the field in another NFL game.

Sports fans have appreciated Harlan’s work for the last several decades, and they’ll likely see him on a new platform next season. As Turner Sports loses rights to the NBA, Harlan is expected to be one of the main play-by-play voices for Amazon’s Prime Video.

We’ll see if he can produce more incredible viral moments from the broadcast booth with his potential new employer.
