Channel 10’s decision to move Big Brother back to its ‘roots’ at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast has left fans unimpressed.

The iconic reality series was originally filmed in a real house in the famed holiday destination back in 2001.

But the new ‘house’ has been built inside a large studio, which has left viewers cold.

‘I just don’t get the reason for no roof in the lounge and the bathroom?’ one fan commented on the show’s official Instagram.

The viewer continued: ‘You’d hear everything. Even the diary room looks like you could hear through the door.’

Another commented: ‘Wasn’t there a time the house was an actual house and not a sound stage?’

One fan also slammed the set for having no windows, calling the design choice ‘crazy’.

Another armchair critic commented: ‘Too colourful doesn’t look like a real house.’

‘I wish they didn’t show us the no ceiling, let us believe it’s a house at least from a viewer perspective,’ commented another fan.

Located among gum trees on the Gold Coast, the original Big Brother house once resembled a palatial Miami mansion with a splash of Hollywood glamour.

The property, which took three months to design and four months to construct, apparently drew inspiration from the world-famous Beverly Hills Hotel.

It was later abandoned after the long-running reality series was cancelled by Channel 10 in 2008.

In 2012, a group of teenagers were caught after ‘vandalising’ the property.

Meanwhile, Seven’s attempted reboot of Big Brother in 2020 and 2021 was filmed on a set at Sydney’s Olympic Park.

It comes after viewers took to social media to give their verdict on Channel Ten‘s revamp of the franchise after its premiere on Sunday with host Mel Tracina.

Fans praised the ‘authentic’ and ‘refreshing’ new cast, calling it a return to the show’s original roots.

‘To give the show credit, I like the fact that viewers are given the platform to watch the cast authentically,’ one fan wrote.

‘Unlike every other reality show currently on air that manufactures villains and controversy. This makes me excited.’

Another viewer added: ‘Mel was fantastic, the cast lacks a little diversity but seem like a good, NORMAL bunch. The look and feel of the whole show is Big Brother. They delivered on everything they promised.’

Despite minor teething issues, the overall consensus online is that Big Brother Australia has recaptured the charm and simplicity that made it a national phenomenon two decades ago.

As one fan summed it up: ‘Growth is realising you judged Colin too quickly – he’s brilliant.’
